Do You Have a Giant Slider?

The new design of homes often adds a enormous opening to the outside. Let’s call it a huge patio door in this case. I’m currently seeing 15 and 16 foot sliders in a lot of homes. The two builders that I’m seeing this from mostly in the Reno and Sparks area are Toll Brothers Homes and Ryder Homes. We have been helping a lot of their clients to do their window treatments, because finding the right solution to these types of openings is not simple. Let’s take a look at the choices we helped this client to make for their huge patio door.

Huge Patio Door Opening

What is the Right Solution for a Huge Patio Door?

If I am to provide the simplest answer to this question, it is that we help our clients determine what the best solution is. There are so many choices for sliding doors. In this case we could have done many different products. For example, aside from curtains or draperies, we could have done:

  • Shades- Which are done in a horizontal format
  • Shutters
  • Blinds- Though I RARELY would suggest them for this type of window
  • Panel Track System
  • Other Types of Draperies
  • and Micro Adjustments from all of the above bullet points

This client was very easy to work with in understanding what their functional desires were. This enabled me to be able to interact with them and help them determine what was the best choice for their needs. Let me just go over a couple of details for this huge patio door that made it even more custom.

Details that Make a Difference

Flat Fascia Drapery Rod

When it comes to custom drapery rods or curtain rods there are so many different choices to choose from. We could have chosen many different materials. For example, in this case we selected a wood fascia rod. This means that there is a flat piece of wood attached to a track system. It could have been a metal fascia as well. The rod could have been a solid wood round rod. A metal rod with various shapes, like round, square, twisted, etc.

Why did we choose this rod? Because in THIS HOME there are flat metal looks surrounding the room. There are stairs and balconies near this huge patio door and the trim pieces have a similar look to what we chose. There is no right or wrong when it comes to design choices. My job is to help my clients make a choice that best finishes off the look that they are creating in their homes. In your home, the choice may be different.

Another example of choices has to do with fabric selections. First of all, we had to choose whether the fabric would be sheer, like it is, or whether it would be lined with a light-filtering lining or lined in a blackout lining. All choices have a dramatic impact on how the materials look in the space and how the light will affect the interior of the room. Again, we discuss every single detail like this when we help our clients to make their window treatment choices. Please contact us if we can assist you with your window coverings.
