There are four main categories of window coverings on the market.

• Blinds
• Shades
• Shutters
• Draperies

Blinds are products that control light and privacy via rotating louvers, whether horizontal or vertical.

 

Shades are one piece of material that cover the window. They usually lift from the bottom, lower from the top or do both simultaneously. They can also be formatted for vertical applications.

 

 

Shutters are a framed and louvered product that are a good choice for a more built-in look for windows. They are available in wood, vinyl, composite and metals. They are excellent at shading and light control.

Draperies are usually products that are made of fabrics that cover windows in various options of pleating.

As well as these four main categories, there are also many “crossover” products which combine the features of these to make unique types of window coverings.
