Roller Shades are the hottest segment of the window covering market at this time. Motorization is also part of most jobs we do these days. This Lake Tahoe home has amazing views, but the sun can be so intense, they asked for screen shades. The motors are a really good idea on this job due to the height of the windows.

Any time that roller shades are very narrow AND very tall, they run the risk of skewing. This means that as the roller shade fabric rolls up on the tube, it can shift to the side. If this happens, the material can be seriously damaged as the material runs into the installation brackets or housing. One way to help avoid this problem is by using motorization.

Very Tall and Narrow Windows

Because motors regulate the tube’s speed, there is less chance of skewing. One of the things that causes a roller shade to get off track is when a customer pulls too hard on a manual control. This can cause the shade to get just a little sideways travel. On a very tall shade by the time the shade rolls all the way to the top, the damage can be severe. We tested these shades going all the way up and all the way down a few times to verify a “clean roll”.

It was necessary to make minor adjustments on the shades’ installation to ensure a plumb roll. If we hadn’t tested the shades, We would probably have had issues down the line.If you have roller shades that are 3 times as tall as they wide, look out. Your windows are definitely a candidate for roller shade damage. Make sure you work with an industry professional to help you avoid damage to your window coverings.
