PowerView Hub is Home Automation

We are living in a very automated world. And most of our devices are connected. Though realistically, though things happen really fast, we move into this world at our own pace. I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years and motorized window treatments have been available for most of that time. But, not until last year did I automate the window treatments in my own home.

I have my shades set to open a bit before sunrise and then close a little after sunset. In most cases I don’t touch them at all. But if I want to, I can use the remote control or just a couple of taps on my phone or tablet to do the same thing.

So, as you can see in the video adding the hub allows you to make your life much simpler. You always have the remote control to make simple commands to your window coverings. But, the PowerView Hub by Hunter Douglas takes it a few steps farther. Notice in the video how you can have individual shade control, but you can also set scenes.

PowerView Hub Scene Controls

Once shades are set into the system, you can add them into scenes. For example, you can have a scene called “Night”. You can instruct your window coverings to go to their most private setting. You can press the scene at any time to make this happen. Even better, you can go to the tab entitled “Automations”. Using this part of the app you can set the time you want this scene to start. I like how the Hunter Douglas PowerView Hub and App allow you to set these times based on the Sunrise and Sunset where you live. It is all done automatically. You get to just have that first cup of coffee without having to do anything. Can you tell I’m writing this in the morning? I didn’t mention not having to interrupt an evening glass of wine!

PowerView Hub and Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Nest

According to Hunter Douglas, “PowerView works seamlessly with the leading Connected Home providers”. As with most technology, your mileage may vary. In most cases, you will find what works best for you. Some people like using the remote controls. Others like using the App. Still others like the voice commands that you can use with Amazon Alexa. Once you get the system installed, you will get to figure out which one is best for you.

My Observations

I’m very happy with the Automated shades in my home. I feel very confident in suggesting them to my clients. Keep in mind that these are operated by radio frequency. This means that they will NEVER work 100% of the time. You should expect that occasionally a shade or two will not receive the signal. Just make sure that you know some tips to limit this occurrence. These are some of the things we talk about when we consult with our clients.
