Decorative side panels have become all the rage. So, unless you are using an attention grabbing fabric, you will need some sort of “punch” in the look. Finials are one way to get the look you want. In order to find the right finials for your application, you probably will need to order them custom, as “stocked” drapery rods tend to be marketed to the masses and typically lack the specificity that is required to really “nail” a look.

As a side point, one other thing that is only available if you order custom drapery rods is the rod itself. When you go to a box store or to an online store to purchase a drapery rod, you are most often going to get a telescoping drapery rod that will expand from one side to another size. This is done to accommodate a great range of sizes. On the other hand, when you order custom, the rod is made to your specifications. The biggest benefit to you is that you don’t have two different diameters of rod width, as one rod fits inside the other. It will be perfectly symmetrical, as it is one piece of wood or metal from end to end.

You will notice that the finials in this video are very large. They measure almost 10″ x 10″. At first glance, they might be imagined as too large, but when the “scale” of the room is considered, they are actually well suited to the overall design. I will discuss more about scale in a another post, but my observation is that people will “under-do” things rather than “over-do” things 99% of the time.
